Trip route: Guangzhou (8 days)> Kota Kinabalu (2 days)> Brunei (2 days)> Kuala Lumpur (2 days)> Johor Bahru (4 days)> Singapore (2 days)

Since East Malaysia was in my planned trip
and if you read the home page of this blog
you will know that I always wish to
travel as many countries as I could
I have added Brunei into the trip

Date.

We arrived at the airport in the morning
and we were thinking
to make some currency exchange at the airport
For your information,
you can find it available on the second floor
as there is no sign around
and not all the staffs can speak English well
However,
the currency was very expensive
so we decided to use the Singapore Dollars instead
Tip: Singapore Dollars can be used at everywhere in Brunei
as they share the exact same currency

We were lucky that a friend of my mum,
who is a Bruneian,
planned the trip for us
She came to pick us up from the airport
otherwise, it would be hard to get a taxi in Brunei
We actually did not see any taxi
during our whole Brunei trip
so we have no idea how a Brunei taxi looks like
neither other public transport

We firstly checked in to the Higher Hotel
it is a new hotel and still under construction
but the room and facilities were very nice
we got upgraded to a better room
and early check-in was organised

How the room looks like

The hotel is also located in a convenient place
as many shops are in walking distance
There is a laundry shop just next to the hotel lobby
this laundry shop is coin operated
so be aware that smaller value of Brunei Dollar is required
Detergent is free there
washing machine and dryer
are both available for 14kg and 28kg wash
We got our dirty clothes from the previous trip to wash
and we headed to nearby shops
while waiting for the wash to be done

If you follow Taiwan entertainment
you will probably know a celebrity
named Chun Wu
who is a Bruneian
He owns some businesses in Brunei
including a gym and a bakery shop
His dad and he used to have
a hotel and a restaurant next to the gym too
However, they are currently closed
and not too sure what is the plan
We went to the bakery shop – Bake Culture
bought 5 bread and got 1 free
originally planned to have them upstairs at the café
but we got to go back for our washed clothes
The taste of the bread was not bad
but they are a little bit pricey
compared to other stores
There is also a Gong Cha shop next to it
if you feel like having bubble tea
Bake Culture

Chun Wu welcomes you
once you step into the shop😃

In the afternoon,
we walked to the Fitness Zone gym to have a look
If we were the hotel guest
then we would be able to use the gym
but as mentioned above
the hotel is currently closed
so we were unable to enter the gym

Later on,
we went to Kampung Ayer
Negotiated with a boatman,
he agreed to bring us around
for a one-hour tour with a price of $30
(It’s better to get a local people
or a person who can speak Malay with you
cos the local may not understand English)
The boatman brought us to see the monkeys
but unfortunately
the monkeys were so far away
and we could not take a picture
Then, he brought us to see the fire station,
police station and schools in the water village
It was cool to know that their firemen
would use a boat to travel during emergency

We got dropped off at the Yayasan Boat Jetty
and we had some food at
the food court in the shopping mall
Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah
We tried one of the local food – Ayam Penyet (chicken)
and ordered the one with salted egg sauce
it was so tasty and I wish I can have it again
Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah

The view of the food court was so great tho

Then,
we visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque
it stated that non-Muslims are not allowed to enter
while there is religious activity in progress
so we were not able to see the indoor decoration
However, there was something to see
at the waterfront area

There is also an eco-park around
Some locals are selling things there
like kites, bubble wands and drinks
We bought ourselves a kite with only $5
and enjoyed flying the kite up high in the sky 😃
Makhota Jubli Emas Park

When the sky turned dark
we had our dinner at Kaizen Sushi
the best Japanese restaurant in Brunei
their menu has many selections
and the food tastes really good
price is reasonable as well
We recommended!

After dinner
we walked around the park again
to see the night view

Later on,
a local man recommended us the Brunei local rice
called "Nasi Katok"

As per Wikitravel-
Katok is actually "ketuk" in the Malay language, and it means knock.
There is a story behind the name Nasi Katok.
It was begun by a couple of teenagers who were feeling
very hungry after a midnight practice.
They went to a place where they normally bought their food.
This place was actually a residential house,
which offered Nasi bungkus (a pack of rice with chicken and egg)
even in the middle of the night.
At any time you could just Katok (knock) on their door,
and the owner will come up with fresh hot Nasi Katok.
And that's how it became Nasi Katok.

After tasting the rice,
I would say it is the same as Nasi Lemak
which is the popular rice dish in Malaysia
Nasi Katok"

Nasi Katok
你随时Katok(敲)他们的门

Nasi Lemak
